A clear explanation of the two clocks behind inpatient hospital benefit periods.
When the period begins and ends
A Part A benefit period begins with inpatient hospital or skilled nursing facility care. It ends after 60 consecutive days without inpatient hospital or skilled nursing facility care. Multiple stays can fall within one benefit period.
Two different clocks
The benefit-period clock tracks time out of inpatient care. The hospital-day counter tracks inpatient hospital days used within the current period. Day 61 means the 61st inpatient hospital day used—not 61 calendar days since admission.
Observation is different
An observation stay is outpatient care and does not count as an inpatient hospital stay. Ask the hospital about your admission status. The supplied handout includes 2026 Original Medicare figures; amounts may change annually.
