Employer considerations

Look beyond the monthly premium.

Provider access, employee cost sharing, participation requirements and renewal timing all deserve a place in the conversation.

Begin with your team and your business

Employee benefits can support your workforce, but the first step is understanding the business rather than selecting a plan from a catalog. Scott works with small-business owners, executives, HR managers and office managers on group health, dental and vision coverage. Start with where employees work, how many people may be eligible, whether you already offer coverage and when you expect to make a change. Eligibility, participation and contribution rules depend on the carrier and arrangement. General website information does not confirm that your business or an employee meets a particular plan’s requirements.

Small-group coverage in California

California’s small-group market generally serves employers with 1–100 employees, with specific rules for counting employees and establishing eligibility. Covered California for Small Business describes its own participation and application requirements. It is one source of information, not a promise that Boyer offers every marketplace product or that your business qualifies. Ask Scott which current coverage channels and carrier arrangements are available through the agency. If your organization is self-funded or has employees in multiple states, different regulatory or coverage considerations may apply. Confirm the relevant structure before comparing benefits.

Compare access, costs and employee needs

Group medical plans can differ in provider networks, referrals, out-of-network benefits and employee cost sharing. HMO and PPO labels are only a starting point. Ask how employees can verify doctors and hospitals in the actual plan, and review deductibles, copayments and out-of-pocket limits. Dental and vision benefits should be evaluated separately because their limits and provider arrangements may differ from medical coverage. A premium comparison alone does not explain how employees use their benefits. Scott can help organize the questions and current plan documents without publishing plan-level benefit claims on this website.

Enrollment and service through the year

Benefits need attention after an initial enrollment. New hires, departing employees, dependent changes and renewal decisions can create administrative questions. Scott remains a direct point of contact for enrollment assistance, employee changes, renewal reviews and ongoing service. The applicable plan and legal rules still determine eligibility, deadlines and effective dates. Ask which documents are needed, who is responsible for submitting them and how to confirm a change has been processed. Do not put employee medical records, Social Security numbers or completed enrollment forms in the website inquiry; arrange the approved secure process with Scott.

Prepare for your renewal conversation

A useful renewal review looks at the current benefits, employer contribution approach, employee feedback and any changes in the workforce. Discuss when decisions and employee communications need to happen, rather than waiting until the current coverage ends. Some businesses may have questions about tax credits, continuation coverage or employer obligations. Eligibility for tax benefits and legal compliance should be confirmed with official sources and qualified tax or legal advisers. No tax credit or savings is guaranteed here. To begin, request a conversation with Scott using only your contact information and a general employee-benefits interest.

Can a small California business explore group health insurance?

Yes, but eligibility depends on the business and applicable carrier or program rules. California’s small-group market generally covers employers with 1–100 employees. Scott can discuss current options and the information needed to confirm eligibility.

Does Boyer help after employees enroll?

Scott provides ongoing help with enrollment, employee changes, renewal reviews and coverage questions. Plan terms and applicable rules determine the deadlines and effective dates for each change.

What should we bring to a first conversation?

Your company location, approximate team size, current coverage, and renewal month are a useful start. Keep employee medical records and identification numbers out of the website questionnaire. Scott can explain the appropriate secure process for any later enrollment documents.

Can we discuss dental and vision benefits separately?

Yes. Boyer’s employee-benefits services include group dental and vision coverage. Review provider access, benefit limits, eligibility and participation requirements separately from the medical plan. Current products and terms must be confirmed for your group.

Small Business Health Insurance & Employee Benefits

Small business employee benefits guidance

Choosing group health insurance is one of the biggest decisions a small business makes. You want good coverage for your employees and a cost your company can plan around. Boyer Insurance Services has worked with employers since 1969, from car dealerships and light manufacturers to law firms, CPAs and human resources firms.

How an Employee Benefits Broker Helps

As an independent employee benefits agent and broker, we work with several insurance companies. We help you understand your options, request quotes, compare plan designs and set up coverage. After your plan is in place, we help with renewals, new hires and employee questions.

Small-Group Health Insurance in California

In California, small-group health insurance generally covers employers with 1 to 100 eligible employees. Insurance companies set their own participation and employer contribution rules, so it helps to know these before you request quotes.

HMO vs. PPO Plans for Your Group

Most group medical plans are either an HMO or a PPO. Many employers offer one of each, sometimes called a dual-option plan.

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): employees choose a primary care doctor in the network and usually need referrals to see specialists. HMO plans often cost less.
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): employees can see network providers without referrals and can usually go out of network for a higher cost. PPO plans often cost more.

Benefits Beyond Medical

  • Group dental insurance
  • Group vision insurance
  • Group life and disability insurance
  • Voluntary benefits that employees can choose and pay for themselves

Employees Turning 65

If some of your employees are 65 or older, the size of your company affects how your group plan works with Medicare. We can explain these rules to you and to your employees. Learn more about Medicare and employer coverage.

What We Need for a Quote

  • Your group name and size (number of employees)
  • Your company location (city, state and ZIP code)
  • The plan types you are interested in (PPO, HMO or dual-option) and your general budget
  • A census of eligible employees applying for coverage
